This project involved construction of a five-lane roadway section with sidewalks on both sides by replacing an existing four-lane roadway while maintaining two-way traffic flow at all times.
Sequencing the paving operation to maintain traffic was a major achievement. US 50 is the major east-west route through Dodge City. Staged construction was required to maintain two lanes of traffic at all times. The project presented design challenges regarding the profile grade line. The terrain was such that widening the roadway created some difficult entrance profiles that resulted in very steep profile grades. To remedy this issue a combination of sidewalk retaining walls were used to minimize the property acquisition. Signals were designed to work in the various phases of the project.
